With the tongue, there is no set time for healing. Often its reported that after 6-8 months people can take the piercing out for a while and the hole won't close, but based on the fact the tongue is a muscle and regenerates cells quickly its safe to assume that it doesn't really heal. Rather, the area just becomes adjusted and used to the piercing to where it feels and is assumed to be healed.

With the tongue piercing, you should always clean the area regularly. This minimizes germs and bad breath.

As far as swelling it takes anywhere from 3-10 days for swelling to go down. Motrin and other OTC noninflammatory pain relievers can help. Sucking on ice chips is also soothing. As far as eating and talking normally, when the swelling goes down and you get a shorter barbell, you will notice some improvement, but its really just something you need to get used to having in your mouth.

I own a small piercing and tattoo shop and i have found that there is never a set time that it takes to heal. It depends on how you care for your piercing and how long your body normally takes to heal.
personnally it has taken me a week to ten days for my tongue to heal, and i have 3 seperate piercings on my tongue.

You can rinse with warm salt water. Also and inexpensive way to clean the tongue is to purchase a bottle of antibactierial listerine (the yellow one) any other listerine will cause your tongue to grow over the tongue barbell. which is definatly not a good idea. I have had people come to me and ask me to dig their tongue rings out for them. not a pretty sight.

all in all i hope you enjoy your new piercing. and remember to clean it every day twice a day. DO NOT CLEAN IT MORE THAN 3 TIMES A DAY. It is possible to over clean a piercing which causes it to become raw and iritated and can slow healing time considerably.

Another important thing to consider after healing is the length of the barbell you choose for your final jewelry. Most standard lengths are actually too long and can damage teeth and trip you up when you talk, making you lisp. I have a 2 ga barbell in my tongue, but it is only 1/2 inch long. Most people do not even notice it in normal conversation, and you can only see it if I show it to you.

Acrylic balls are also a very bad idea, they strip easily and any alcohol will make them crack, whether it be shots of Yaeger or your favorite mouthwash. The last thing you want is to wake up in the morning and find your barbell gone.
