A mare can come into season as often as once every 28 days throughout the breeding season (usually March - August), usually for between 3 and 7 days.
There is not much you can really do other than try feeding her some herbal supplements that may ease some of her symptoms. Think of her as a woman with PMT and you will understand why she becomes so stroppy.
It maybe that she is more inclined to show herself in season or it may be that another horse (usually a male) is showing receptive behaviour and this is encouraging her. Some geldings will respond to an in season mare even though they cannot do anything about it! You may need to separate her from these horses during her time of the month.
Try talking to your feed supplier to see if they make any supplements that may help. Dodson and Horrell make a supplement called Stroppy Mare that you could try. Check out their website for more details:

Hi my mare used to come into season weekly or daily she was a nightmare I had to try and work out why it was happening. She was turned out with a mare and gelding and next door was a gelding. She fancied the pants off the horse next door and always went gooey over him but that wasn't the problem. When she was turned out in the day when no one was around the pony in the field with her was mounting her so as she was getting it all the time she was constantly in season and giving me hell. She keps box walking and trying to come over the top of her stable door total cow bag. There wasn't any other horse I could turn her out with so I ended up moving yards the place she is at now she is turned out with lots of mares and geldings and is really settled and hasn't come into season yet!!! The owners of the previous yard KNEW that the pony she was out with liked mounting the mares but didn't tell me and kept blaming my mare for her behaviour (very odd people). Anyway she should only be in season for a few days if it drags on you can try her on a feed suppliment called Ostress or moody mare to try and calm her a bit. The vet can plant "marbles" into her utarus so she thinks she is constantly carrting a foal and it stops her seasons. But that is pretty much last resort.

Don't worry! My mare was always trying to get over to the other horses and when she couldn't would stand at the fence rear end facing the others and winked at them!! Very embarrassing. Only lasts about 2 or 3 days usually.
Has she a companion you can put with her? Even a goat?
The only thing to do if there is a possibility that she would injure herself trying to get out, is to stable her for a few days. Don't bother with medications or herbal remedies. Good Luck!

How long have u had her? could she be missing her old friends and trying to make new ones? u could try getting her a companion (gelding). Her heat cycle should not be causing this type of problem however,as for her trying to get to the horses in the field, WELL, tho most times it's the stud who tries to get to the mare, don't be fooled by the innocence if the mare she too will flirt and flaunt what she has to offer, it's only nature taking it's course, this part of her cycle will only last 6-8 days

Unless one of the horses in a the adjoining field is a stallion, which is unlikely, then being in season does not explain her behaviour. Certainly mares can get tetchy while in seaason (just like us women!), but it is usually stallions who are more likely to try and get to the other horses for this reason. Possibly your mare is just in need of company, they are herd animals and need to be close to other horses - if possible, get a companion pony for her, a shetland or retired horse will cost next to nothing and will provide her with the company she needs.
For the moment, make sure she gets plenty excercise and if it is not possible to get her in with the other horses, which would solve the problem, make sure she is either stabled or put her in a different field so she doesn't injure herself trying to get to them.
The height of her season will probably last about 7 days.

The horse being in season will last up to a week, but it can vary amongst animals. There are other reasons why she may be trying to get to them: she may not be used to being stabled, she may not enjoy being stabled and thinks it's unfair that she has to be in, if you bought her from the same yard, then it could be her friends she is missing and when she sees them outside it may cause her to fret. If you have recently bought her, it could be a change of routine that is upsetting her - she may be used to staying out longer, or not brought in at all.
Boredom can also be a problem. She will need to be kept occupied with plenty of hay and attention. keep to a strict routine with her for a few weeks and see if she settles, if not you may have to try other methods like leaving her out late or keeping her out. Being in season could make the trauma seem worse for her.

Mares cycle starting in the early spring and go into the fall then stop for the winter.
They cycle about every 28 days and are "in heat" for only three or so days.
They can get sort of noisy and squeal quite a bit. They will pee in front of other horses and wink their privates at the others horses.

Hi the horse has very similar cycle to women, so you will have to endure this behaviour every month throughout spring summer and early winter slows down rest of year. If you find she gets very irritable you can add oestrus powder to her food and also get vet to insert marbles which really do work. I know a horse that has had this done and its a huge improvement. Good luck.

My husband and I own Appaloosas. My mare goes into heat and it will last for 3 or 4 days. Her mate is a gelding and is no help to her so she dont stay in season for long. In the field next to you they must have a stud that she wants to notice her. Besides keeping her inside her stall with things to lick and nibble on the only thing to do is wait it out. It will be over soon. Good luck!
