i was just wondering but when people abbreviate the word Christmas it really bothers me! Does it bother you? Is it disrespecting?

No, I consider its origin. People, historically, have been persecuted for being Christian, and for being Catholic, and for being Protestant, forced to practice their religion in secret. The "X" was a code sign for the word Christ. Note the similarity between the X and a Christian cross.
To me, it is not disrespectful, one is not replacing Jesus with anything, quite the op posit. It is remembering those who were persecuted and martyred because of their beliefs. And I have heard about the Greek source for why the X is used in that culture.
The fish is also such a symbol, and Christians proudly put it on the rear bumper of their cars! The sign is not disrespectful, but that use of it is! Honk if ya luv Jay-sus! Please.
Have a Merry Xmas, everyone!

Historically speaking, the letter "X" in this case is the greek letter "Chi", which is the first letter in the Greek spelling of Christ. Throughout the years, it has been a common shorthand for theologans when referring to Jesus Christ. So, technically, X-mas is literally just an abbreviation for Christ-mas. Over the years, people have started using the abbreviation in order to "remove" Christ from Christmas, and I find that bothersome, but they're going to have to find another way to do it. Using "X" instead of "Christ" still leaves the root of Christ in the word.

No, because I've read the following article in many different ways throughtout my life. It is nice to be open minded, and not find fault in the smallest things.

"Xmas is an abbreviation for Christmas. It is derived from the word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ, transliterated as Christos, which is Greek for Christ. Greek is the language in which the whole New Testament was written."

something as simple as that doesn't bother me...there are too many other things to worry about. But I will say that I believe it to be somewhat disrespectful. Replacing 'Christ' with 'X' says it all. After all, the holiday is a celebration of the birth of Christ - whether you believe it or not. And afterall, folks - is the word really that long? Are we all that busy that we can't take the time to write or type out a nine letter word????

No, it's not disrespecting, and if Christians knew a little bit about the history of their own faith this pointless debate wouldn't keep resurfacing every year.

"X" has been a legitimate and acceptable symbol for Christ for over a thousand years. Christians unwillingness to accept that says more about their own ignorance than about the level of respect implicit in the practice.

you're actually precise. it is no longer God (I call Him Krishn) who's finding for praises and adulations from us. in the beginning we even don't be attentive to who God easily is. So we could initiate estimating Him. he's larger than something that we've seen best. yet smaller than the minutest particle that we've seen, and that too by a microscope! So we can be a depressing failure in fathoming the largeness and smallness of God. this manner of one as this, who suits this sort of description, and if can take a actual physique shape, would be an Absolute entiety. And if we someway can come head to head with Him, what else can we do different than seeing Him in finished disbelief. And what else yet falling at His ft often is the only decision left to us! it is no longer God who needs our adulations, that's in our very own pastimes to start worshipping Him, so as that all of us be attentive to nicely in hand, as to how we can face Him, if we take place to fulfill Him!
