"In war, there are no runner ups" - Omar Bradley

The British.

The United Kingdom, which had already lost much of its wealth as a result of the First World War, was wrecked economically by the Second World War. Although it was given loans by the United States to rebuild these were not as generous as those to Western Europe, in part because the USA want to make sure Britain lost its Empire. Rationing lasted in the UK until 1953, well after it had been abolished in Western Europe, including Germany.

Today's "The Times" has as its front page story a US State Department analysis that the USA is losing the UK through a totally one-sided relationship. The State Department is, unfortunately, quite right, but this has been going on much longer than over Iraq. Most people in the UK wish to be friends with the USA as a fellow democracy, but anybody looking closely at the history of the Second World War and subsequent events should realise the need to repair this alliance in the interests of fairness and equality if it is to remain strong.

The Americans and the Russians tied for first place and became superpowers. Britain definately took the bronze and won alot of prestige but not alot else. The empire declined rapidly thereafter. France nominally came 4th, but put in a disappointing performance all told. I would put Italy 5th. They were allied to the Germans, forming the heart of the Axis, but chickened out when the tide started turning. Germany and Japan have to tie for last place. Germany got bombed to smitherenes and Japan got atomised, but incredibly, both these countries emerged well after the war because their industries were rebuilt by the victors and therefore were hyper-modern. Look at Germany and Japan these days - hardly struggling.

If you consider the Germans to have "come second" then maybe the Japanese came third - or the Italians. Hard to answer this exactly as it barely makes sense

No one, because there is no such thing as second place in war.
