Evolution. "Good" and "bad" smells are species specific; flies like the smell of dog poop because they eat it, people don't because we could catch a disease from it.

Personal preference. You might think something smells bad, another person thinks it smells good. Smells arise feeling within us good feeling associayed with each smell or bad feelings associated with each smell. Every single person is different. Most human can assiciate some smell as bad unanimously such as a fart, fescies, rotten milk, and the list goes on. But ultimately it is personal experience. i.e. Most great countries use doedorant, we cover up our own funk and and it smells good to us. For example you go to a third world country that does not have or use doedorant (Some countries in Africe, middle east, Middle and southern Asia, India, South America) do not use deodorant. The smell of deodorant is repulsive to them (since they are not used to it) while to use it is pleasant.

Hope that helps with your answer!

Smells are associated with memories. If you continually have a good experience while you are around some particular aroma, you will automatically associate that smell with good feelings, and vice versa with bad experiences. There are however certain 'wired in' preferences for smells to keep us from eating things that will make us sick or breathing something harmful. These smells trigger a brain signal that is more like "warning, warning" than "bad smell, bad memory" however, on a sub-concious level we don't distinguish we just avoid it.

Your own sense of smell. Some people love the smell of perfume, some people loathe it...Dogs think that another animal's pooh smells ambrosial, whereas I think it just smells like pooh. Cats will try to cover theirs up, while a lot of dogs will uncover it and eat it (gross!). I don't think I really answered this very well, but, there it is...
