Bad u-joints maybe? Pilot bearing shot? Either one of these will cause the shifter to vibrate. I would vote for the drive shaft needing new u-joint put in. It being an "89" it is about old enough for the grease to be gone in the joints, and the drive shaft will have spots in it that the needle bearings will stick and lock up causing a vibration. Have you put a clutch in it recently? If so, then you may want to consider the pilot bearing is bad. The nose of the transmission goes into this bearing, and when it goes bad it will shake the shifter, and will also cause the front bearing in the transmission to go bad. It may be bad anyway. Check the u-joints and if its not there, pull the transmission out and replace the pilot bearing and the front shaft bearing in the transmission. I'm assuming its a 5 speed that came in it. You can't tell the bearing is bad by feeling of the input shaft, you must take the transmission apart at the front to get the bearing out. Then you can spin it and feel the bad places in it.

well if you said it was in the stering wheel I would have said front end alignment and or balancing of the tires
if you said in the seat i would say rear tires need balancing
if your tires are old and wore out it can also cause this make sure you check on the inside of the tire too

although i had a car that would vibrate over 65 and it ended up that the drive shaft bolts were commin out cause of the vibration this is an easy fix grab some loc-tight and put it on the bolts before you reinsert them


Check your universial joint on the drive shaft also

U-Joints! no doubt. If you felt the vibration in the steering wheel or in your seat, I'd say tire balance or bad tires.

Get your drive-train checked out by a mechanic to verify, but with the number of pre-94 Fords that I've owned or helped repair, it will end up being your u-joints.

if thats the only symptom then you may have to just simply get the tires balanced and rotated (they're due anyways arent they?)

if you feel a clunk when you shift between gears (more often between reverse and forward shifting) then you may have a ujoint going out.

with the age of the vehicle i probably wouldnt suggest getting your drive shaft balanced unless you do replace your u-joints, hell itll be out anyways and its usualy only around 60 bucks to have it balanced

if the vibration stops after you go faster than that you have a tire out of balance

May need new tires or tire balance. Take it to a mechanic and see if it needs any front end work also.

You could have a wheel balance problem, or perhaps a bad tire. I would start there.

could be a bearing going out in the transmission or a u-joint going out

check your U-Joints on the drive shaft, and also check your transmision mounts.
