I want to wrap some empty boxes with giftwrap to put under the Xmas tree for decor. Would it be possible to shellac them (to preserve them and keep them looking nice) so I can use them in the years to come, as well?

There is stuff called Mod Podge (I think I spelled it right), that will work as a glue if you want to glue the paper to the box and as a topcoat to preserve the paper on top. You just brush it on with a paint brush. I think that would work pretty well. You can get it at a craft supply store.

Absolutely! The best paper to use would be color, decorative tissue paper. Any arts and crafts store carries Christmas wrap as well as shellac to do your project. Tissue is easier to adhere to the boxes putting shellac on it.
