My gas guage hasn't worked since I got this car, it's a 94 Pontiac Sunbird, it always reads that it has half a tank. Was just wondering what were some things that would cause it not to work so that I can look into getting it fixed.

You probably have to replace the send unit assembly in the gas tank. Its a mechanical device with plastic float that sits inside of the tank and the reading on the gague is indicated by the actual position of the float. It could be that the float is stuck half way up.

I wouldnt waste the time and money fixing something like that iwould just just my trip meter. i had this happen to me before after i replaced the fuel pump. i didnt feel like fixing it but i knew i could get over 300 miles to a tank so i just filled it up everytime and pressed the reset button on the trip meter.

I live on a dirt road and eventualy hitting enough bumbs the guage fixed itself months later.

since it reads half full it's getting voltage. It's mounted inside of the gas tank. If it reads half full even when the key is off, the gauge itself is stuck, then you need an instrument cluster

Your sending unit is probably bad. That can be costly.
