I understand christmas decorations should go up on the 6th of December and be taken off on the 6th of January. Why is this?

Traditionally, in the UK decorations went up on the 12th day before Christmas and were taken down on the 12th. day after Christmas. Now they seem to go up earlier and earlier each year!

I saw a few at the end of October this year.

They usually go up after Thanksgiving because that's when folks have the time to do the decorating. Jan 6th is the bring down day, 12 days after Christmas. I think it has to do with when the 3 Wise Men reached the Baby Jesus

I don't put mine up until about ten days before, but I guess you can start up to four weeks ahead as this time is the beginning of Advent.

The decorations are supposed to come down before 12th Night (6th. of January) as tradition has it this is the time that the Magi departed for their own country.

Of course, Orthodox dates would be different, as their Christmas Eve isn't until the 6th. of January.

It really depends on your own personal preference and what you want to do. Most folks put theirs up the day after Thanksgiving. I usually don't get a tree until around the 10th of December because I want it to be fresh for Christmas, and most take their decorations down the weekend after New Years. Everyone is different, so you should do it when you want to do it.

I think it's all your personal preference. There is no right or wrong in this. I do know that many people keep their decorations, and trees up until January for 3 Kings day. I have listed a link that tells a little about it for you.

This is most likely related to Advent (although that doesn't start the 6th, it starts the 3rd this year) and Epiphany (January 6th).

That's about the schedule that my dad goes by with his decorations too.

Dont know when your supposed to put them up, but its not in October like some places do. Though apparently its bad luck if you dont take them down before the 6th of January.

In my family the tradition is to put them up on the first Sunday of Advent and take them down on 7th of January, immediately after Epiphany.

in most working class areas they go up in i think its march and come down again next april. i put mine up in june, covered the whole house outside an in with massive 5000 watt fairy lights. the local airport wasnt too pleased when an air luftansa 747 mistook my house for the airport runway. wait till the neighbours see my christmas tree they'll be so jealous. not many people round my way will have a giant sequoia.

You can put them up any time from now - but they have to be down by the 6th as this is 12th night - bad luck to keep them up any longer than this (according to the superstitious among us)
