I associate it with my mother. Love her to death, but she is the queen of martyrdom.

An insightful question . I think the answer lies in society more than in the individual. Seldom is an act forbidden if it has no pleasure. And guilt requires some act to be forbidden. Forbidding things by civil law or religious law is required to keep society in line with desired social objectives like a happy society. Nonetheless guilt produces hormonal responses in the human. These hormones are making the thoughts of doing the forbidden more exciting to the body and so releasing adrenalin into the blood stream. Adrenalin can get into the brain fluid later in smaller quantities. What is your pleasure is what you want. Of course when a person wants to cut there are other factors and other hormones.

First you have to admit you've done or said something you shouldn't have done. Being in denial of a wrong or defending our actions.
You have to have knowledge of right vs wrong - that inner voice we all have - a conscience.
Example - some people can look you in the face and tell a bold face lie & they think it's ok & have no remorse.
When do I get that feeling? Almost immediately after I've said or done something I shouldn't have done.
Not sure if this is what you were looking for but it's the only way I know how to describe it.

Guilt as an emotion...Cold...first word I thought of.
When I think of how I feel towards my husband.
connect the emotion with...hhmmmm wanting to be single.
Visualize a man I long for, who I cannot have.

Yopu have an inner mind/sense which always say what you have to do.It may bne called, soul, consciousness etc.Every time you do something the inner voice says eiter yes or no.If you do something contrary to this innervoice ,it is "guilt".Guilt is not emotion as such,it is after thought that you should not have done.
The feeling of guilt is that still you can be corrected, there is stll hope to live as a good humanbeing.

Yes, I do: whenever I feel guilty about something wrong, I recollect the image of former Prez Bill Clinton while undergoing impeachment: he was so "sorry" about his action and did feel guilty and it was reported Hillary would have divorced him had she not forgiven the "poor boy" mischief.
