(Generalized because everyone does things a bit different, but it shouldn't be far off of what is below)

What you should expect is a clean, safe and professional piercer who is friendly and smart. As far as pain, that's relative, some people will say it hurts, others say its not bad. Overall, all piercings hurt, but for how quick it is, I promise that it won't be bad.

After filling out paperwork and whatnot, you'll have to wash out your mouth with mouthwash and the piercer will examine your tongue for veins or anything that they will need to be aware of (this also includes abnormal lumps or odd tongue webbing). Depending on your tongue, you might not be able to get a piercing in the center and maybe not even one at all, though that last part is rare.

I mark a spot on the tongue, and ask what the person thinks, though not all piercers do that and there isn't really anywhere else it can go, its just so you know what to expect. From there, clamps will be placed on your tongue, the piercer will probably pierce from the bottom up as to not hit a vein or anything and then the jewelry goes in, all in all, its done and over with very quick. You will be asked to rinse out your mouth again. (Some piercers do free hand piercings, but the clamps help hold the tongue steady and in place)

After you have the piercing done, they should go over aftercare and give you a sheet about this. After 7-14 days when swelling goes down, you go back and they will put in a shorter and more suiting barbell.

During the process, the piercer should explain what is going on and I'm sure you know that they should show you that all the tools and equipment are clean and safe.

Things I warn others about: avoid foods that are spicy and acidic, start using a new tooth brush immediately, try not to play with the tongue and piercing. Eat soft foods for the first few days and take Motrin to ease swelling and pain.

Expect swelling and adjustment to eating for 4-14 days, expect some bleeding, but nothing excessive.

Good luck and if you need more info for the time being go to:

Side note:They should not numb the tongue, this should never be done as numbing often relaxes the muscle tissue which can cause inaccurate piercings. Also, while numb, if something does go wrong, you won't feel it for hours. There is never a need to numb an area to be pierced and if you are that worried about the pain, you wouldn't get the piercing.

well, they dont numb it
usually they'll have you rinse w/mouthwash then put a lil' bib on ya incase of any saliva dripping, that part can be a bit embaressing but it's just part of the deal.
they do use a clamp, with a whole in the middle. then try and find the best part on your tongue to place the barbell, which varies because everyone's tongue webbing is different and if it's not in the correct place there could be big hazards(i.e.- accessive bleeding or even death if it punctures certain veins). then they usaully put a small dab where theyre planning on piercing then let you look in the mirror to see. then comes the needle.

most ppl say the clamp it's self hurts much more than the actual piercing and in my opinion, as long as you have a good piercer than it should. which is another thing, make sure you have a good piercer!

Oh honey they don't numb your tongue, you feel it ALL. It is just about the same way. First they will have you rinse out your mouth with mouth wash, then they will check to see if your have a vein going down the middle of your tongue. Then they will clamp your tonuge like when you got your bellybutton pierced, after that they dry your tongue mark a dot in the middle of it, make sure it is centered. Here comes the pain, you get poked with the neddle. And you should eat as much ice as you can stand!!!

First they have you rinse your mouth with mouthwash, Then they grab your tongue with a clamp, that has a small hole in the center
.
They dry off your tongue, dot where the piercing will go and then stick a big needle(rod) right through. And then put the barbell in.
There is no numbing.

Hi i had my tongue pierced many moons ago now, ten years to be precise. I cant say for all piercers and i dont no how times have changed but with me they sprayed my tongue with a freezer which made me lose all control of my saliva which was not attrative and then cliped my tongue so they could pull it out and prevent me from jerking it back in. Then as with your belly button they force a rod threw it and then attached your piercing , before pulling it back threw and screwing your ball onto it. Its all over in a jiffy with no pain. The following days are alittle discomforting, but top tip from my piercer was to drink plenty of lucozade and i had no problems.

They don't numb it. They make you use back-wash which numbs it a little bit. They use a clamp to keep your tongue from moving, then they take a needle and poke it through your tongue. It really doesn't hurt that much. It's really after the fact. You basically have to relearn how to talk with it in and eat. I would keep ice on it for the next few days to keep the swelling down and after you eat or drink and even touch your tongue always use an antiseptic mouth wash.

When I had my tongue done 2 yrs ago they just clamped and pierced it. Nothing was done to numb it first as it's over in seconds and it doesn't hurt as much as a navel piercing.

They put a circular clamp on the part of the tongue to be pierced a stick a needle through it. Simple as that.
