Anyone who knows something about music would agree that Walter Becker (Steely Dan) is probably the most innovative guitarist of anyone on this list. Truly an amazing guitarist. Hendrix was certainly the great pioneer of the modern day rock guitarist. If not for him there might not be many of the super groups of the '70's. He died too young so his resume will never really be complete. Jeff Beck can be summed up in one word, " fabulous". Eddie Halen is a great talent but plays a lot of "junk" . He likes to dazzle you with his "stuff" if you know what I mean. Eric Clapton might be the most overrates guitarist is rock history. He has mastered a few riffs which are his trademarks but the reality of it is that the other four on your list are far better guitarist than he. I would rate these five in this order:
1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Walter Becker
3. Jeff Beck
4. Eddie Van Halen
5. Eric Clapton

I would say Jimi Hendrix since he was the pioneer of modern guitar. However, each of the listed players is a "god" in his own right. None of them have the same guitar playing style, so it's hard to say this one is better than that one.

Clapton for his era, because of the Cream days, but Eddie Van Halen for this era. Am i allowed to say Kirk Hammett as my top guitarist?(of today) i know its not in your list, but i just wanted to have my say - that wee guy is so cool, and he does his thing without any pomp at all, i think he rocks.

Jimi Hendrix.
During his time he was admired by his peers(Beck and Clapton...the others weren't around yet)
the second best on the list I would have to say Jeff Beck.

They are all great guitarists, and it's hard to compare them because they all had such different playing styles. Overall, I'd have to say Van Halen because he encorporated more than just picking into his play.

Are those the only choices....what about Yngwie Malmsteen; Eric Johnson; Robert Cray; Stevie Ray Vaughn; Ritchie Blackmore....
But if it was the list above, I'd say:
Eric Clapton.
