I live in Greece and we begin some time before any event by saying, Let's hope we will have a good Christmas, Easter, Summer, Winter etc. Nearer to the date we then go on to say Happy Christmas etc.

Firstly it is CHRISTMAS and not XMAS. Two weeks before when writing and on Christmas Day when face to face. You can a few days before Christmas say," Have a nice Christmas"

Good question. It seems that every year christmas and its rampant commercialisation are brought upon us earlier and earlier. I only say it to people I won't see again before christmas.
