Think of what the reader will expect to happen, then create a twist at the end that they won't expect.

Well I guess it depends on what you are actually writing really.

If your writing is tightly plotted, then you need to ensure that whatever conclusion you have is logical and fits with the plot development in the rest of the book (this is why I find the resolution to Stephen King's "It" deeply unsatisfying, as I think a giant spider-monster from space is a bit of a cop-out).

If you're writing a thriller, you can put in a plot twist or you could be even smarter and finish with an entirely predictable conclusion but lead the reader astray by having a double plot twist before you get there. (Jeffrey Deaver is the master of this)

If you're doing a murder mystery, you can throw in red herrings, plot devices such as misheard conversations etc., twists etc (Try reading Ngaio Marsh or Agatha Christie for examples).

Ultimately you need to finish in a way that excites you and suprises the readerand, as I said earlier, it may even be that the predictable conclusion may be the one that suprises the reader.

Good luck

The simplest way is to be unpredictable in your conclusion.

That way you will not allow the audience to see your unpredictability in the conclusion because they thought it would be predicted but as you will show them that the ending was not as predicted as they thought but was totally unpredictable.

subtly incorporate things that could lead to another conclusion. The won't be what people notice, but then the ending will make sense.

i think u should try to imagine YOU'RE reading the story or watching the movie, and what end YOU would expect, then do something totally different!!!!!!
