all the file applications are on the new hard drive but all the shortcuts dont appear on the desktop or in the All programmes tab after clicking on start, if i do a Find i can find the the files but no way off running them unless the install part of the file is still there

Only older applications can be copied to a new disk and be expected to work. Newer ones include entries in Windows Registry and might not work at all if moved. The solution is to use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to delete the programs and references. Then re-install the programs.

Alternative is to copy the whole disk image, including Windows, using such as Norton Ghost. I used Paragon Partition Manager 2005, a free version with Personal Computer World (UK) October 2006.

you should of you a ghost programme try a system search in all files and folders.or go to my computer drive c right click and see what files are there.try this to any other drives that's in my computer

See if you can find them via Windows Explorer, search through the files/folders and see if they are there. If you didn't copy the programs install file (program.exe) they won't run properly

Why not keep youre old hard drive hooked up to just run one as master and the other as slave. THat way you can access all youre old stuff and haqve the added memory
