Let me surprise everyone and say that they are not the same, necessarily. The first computer that I bought was a Mac but NOT made by Apple. That's because for a few years, Apple licensed the Mac operating system to at least five other companies. The company that made the biggest gain in market share and was poised to put the squeeze on Apple was called Power Computing, based in Round Rock, Texas, the same town as Dell.
In 1997, Microsoft was under the thumb of the U.S. government for trying to put Netscape out of business illegally. Apple was going down fast without the leadership of Steve Jobs who had been forced out. Microsoft took advantage of Apple and stole dozens of features from the Mac system and put them into Windows 95. That brought about a huge lawsuit by Apple that was settled out of court (a couple of years after release of Win95) with a payment of 250 million to Apple on the under-the-table stipulation that Apple would use most of the money to buy Power Computing (thus keeping Apple in business which would also keep Microsoft from looking like a monopoly), stop making Netscape the default browser on new Apple computers and make Internet Explorer the default browser instead and stop putting Netscape on new Apples at all after two more years. Hmmm... brilliant move by Microsoft. It helped keep a rival operating system (Macintosh) and its maker (Apple Computer) in business which made MS look less like a bully. But only a little bit less...
So, the truth (hidden, of course) is that Microsoft kept Apple in business.
Apple stopped licensing the Mac OS soon after that lawsuit so now Apple is a hardware and operating system marriage with some software made for Windows such as iTunes and QuickTime.

There are many differences.
The Mac is a more secure system where the internet is concerned. It is as a rule more intuitive to use than the PC. The newer Macs can run both Mac OS X software (operating system) and Windows operating sytem software....the best of both worlds......Mac will more than likely be my next systems because it can run both operating system.
Oh, Macs are more expensive than PCs. But I think well worth the extra dollars.
