Coin spirit? I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing but...many ancient cultures believed that money absorbed the sins of all who touched it. Therefore the beginning of the idea the money is dirty.
I once had an American silver dollar from 1897. It was given to me by a friend who apparently somehow got it from William S. Burroughs. I fell asleep with the coin in my pocket once and had dreams about hanging out with Burroughs so I tried it again and consistently had dreams about Burroughs. Silver is a metal associated with dreaming.
All metals absorb energy really well. Thus, sometimes strange things happen with coins. I've seen Wiccans make amulets out of pennies because they are copper (copper is a good metal for love amulets).
