Real money has a long history. It is used everywhere, printed by authorities and used by people. it could be traded and exchanged. Similarly Internet Money could be a useful tool if some big names start to circulate their money. e.g. Y!$, MS$, G$. Yahoo! Answers has a system of points which could be adjusted to better fit the function of money. And maybe soon we can download a music by these points(Y!$) or exchange it with MS$ to buy software.

The financial system runs entirely on abstract, "virtual" basis. From credit cards, to checks, to stocks.... most advanced economies already have a large degree of virtual money going around.

As for the internet, most websites already accept your money, with some online roleplyaing games, such as second life, fueling entire virtual economies where you can buy and sell items for your characters, you can buy them a home, trade your game points for cash, etc.
Pretty stupid if you ask me, but there's a lot of people whose lives revolve around those games and the virtual economies they fuel. As amazing as it sounds, there are even sweatshops in China that make profits entirely out of playing computer games 24 hours a day!

"Internet Money" already exists, albeit not with such an obvious name.

It will likely happen at some point, but right now it seems that credit cards fill that purpose well enough.

God bless.
