I have some protected documents in Adobe Reader for my research paper. Since there is many pages and it is too expensive to print, I would rather read it form my computer. However, I don't have any idea how to mark or highlight some important parts of the texts or to put some comments. Of course, I have no intention to change the original. Thanks!

Hi

I'm afraid there is no way you can highlight a PDF document in an unlicensed, free version. But yes, there is a way to get around your present problem.

Open your PDF document, CTRL + A -- this selects the whole text -- paste it into a Word File and do some editing because a few figures may come blurred and there may be some difficulty from a legibility point of view. By and large, all your content is selected now. Do your editing here. Whatever things you needed to highlight, do them with your fav colors. Later, you can convert the files back to PDF version using these downloads:

Adobe Acrobat Free Trial version (expiry 30 days) can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/acrobatstd.html which is enough time for your present needs.

I personally prefer Click to Convert Acrobat (expiry 15 days) http://www.clicktoconvert.com/index.html

Of course, you need to buy licensed versions later on, but if you don't need to, I guess still it is the best alternative we have here with you.

I don't have a copy of the reader handy (I use Acrobat, not reader is why) but up on the toolbar you should see the highlight tool. It has a "T" and looks like a yellow highlighter beside it. Click that and you can highlight your text.

In Adobe Reader 7.0, if it's a protected document, you can't do anything to it. The only thing you could do is save a text copy in Word that you can highlight.

With Acrobat Reader Professional Installed on you computer you can do lots of stuff like highlighting text, adding comments and lot more.
But it is not free.

You can use the 'Select Text' tool from the basic toolbar. The button looks like a cursor with the letter 'T' beside it. If you can't see it, you might need to display the toolbar. To do this, click on the 'View' menu, then 'Toolbars', then 'Basic'.

Hope this helps!
