Jaime Cancio (Jim) makes a good point. I too have been under this kind of intense pressure. The mind, like the rest of the body, has a way of re-orienting itself to meet the challenges it faces.
I, for example, can start working on a new project - much of it requiring new and better solutions to existing problems. The mind works... timeline in place... days of coding... you sleep and what happens?
The mind continues to work. You have dreams looking at the problems in different ways, analysying... accessing higher brains functions. You wake up exhausted:-(
You can't turn the brain off. You can't dismiss and iron flat life's lessons. They are and will always remain a part of you. Synapses, connections are formed. New clever routes are channeled to face current life issues. What you do instead is re-orient the brain.
Meditation, chess have been suggested - depending on the current demands the brain is facing. Reading is an excellent activity (but only if you enjoy doing it) as it forces you to create mental images of written words giving the mind something else to focus on.
(as a side note, I find that when I don't read for a while and then start again - my dreams are much better structured and cohesive. They follow a better logical order. More proof, to me, that the brain continues to reshift based on what you are doing in life).
My suggestion has always been to do something you enjoy. Sleep well, get out and play sports, converse with family and friends, work on a hobby. Long weekends are good for that. Vacations are also good for that - though people often stay home on vacation and dwell on what they are taking vacations for...
If you work with a computer all day long - you turn it off for 2/3 days and get involved with something else... If you feel that real life is passing you by, volunteer work is the solution for some.
Each person is different and must find their own center. The key is to find something you enjoy because, in the end, we are trying to diminish pressures, negative emotional buildup, etc..

That's what sleep is for.Do you get 8-9 hours of solid sleep EVERY night? When I got tied in knots because of some mind draining work.I would stop, find some other task that had to be done but was a boring mindless project. That way I stayed productive. But gave my mind a brake.

As a business person who once had intense responsibility in a business paradigm that required 24/7 response to all levels of business and security; one does often times have a mind filled with to many mental activities to sort out all that is mentally negative that has often times effected many of the people around me. I have watched as many times others are effected by the mental fatigue, depression and negative feelings you suggest. To clear my mind I found the best device to help clear a person mind is rest and relaxation reflective to a time management environment. Just as I had the responsibility to the business I found the responsibility to rest as well on a timely daily manner.
That rest and what I call mind focusing helped me, I play chess. When I concentrate on playing chess I found I can put all other things out of my mine and focus on just the game. When business has me down, when I can't sort out what I would want to do, when my mind is tired, when I need time to think clearly, I play chess on-line against all. It only takes a few minutes my body relaxes, my mind is freed up and I am ready to face business, indeed life, with a clear mind. The truth is, after prioritizing what I next have to do - take care the attention I can direct at the next one thing I have to do. Basically, I am recharged and can intently focus on what needs to be done. My body and mind have rested and are co-ordinated in activity.
You would probably ask how effective is this, let me assure you it worked for me and the responsibilities I faced where intense, daily, and of a business nature/environment that was intense, I saw many, far to many, others fail in this endeavor many to physical ills and a few suicides.
I would also relate that to effectively defeat this problem, one has to realize that it is others and their demands on one will that will cause the most problems. Addressing how you will handle outside influences on your life has to be part of your focus as well. I followed what business demanded of me, and by that I mean the company at all times. People and there problems never bothered me - the business model of operation it what is important. What worked in business worked in life relationships as well.
