This usually happens due to lack of oxygen.
My 1st son was born blue. He had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and he didn't start to breathe on his own right away, although he did have a heart beat. The doctors intubated him (put a breathing tube down his throat) and he had to be fed through a tube that went through his nose to his stomach.
He was kept in the NICU (special care nursery) for 8 days (until the tubes were removed and he was breathing/nursing on his own, gaining weight, and passed all the tests he was given).
We had to follow up with a Neonatologist for the next 2 years to make sure he was developing properly and hadn't suffered any neurological problems due to lack of oxygen.
He will be 3 on Dec 04 and is as "normal" as can be.
Don't worry too much!! Modern medicine is amazing and children are VERY resiliant!
Good luck and God bless!

If oxygen gets deprived to the brain there is a chance of damage however this is not true in all cases as some babies fully recover - the worst case scenario would be the baby succumbing to the respiratory problems and passing on.
Doctors will know what to do and will take proper care of the baby to ensure its chances of a healthy survival are good.

Most baby's are born blue until they take their first breath of oxygen. They will give the baby some oxygen and maybe put it in the nicu until the respiratory thing is figured out!

the cord may have been wrapped around the baby's neck, cutting oxygen to baby's lung. or baby had a bowel movement in the womb and swallowed some of it and that may also cause respiratory problems as well....

Usually the umbilical cord gets entangle around the baby's neck during childbirth. This cuts off the baby's oxygen supply.

then it should be on a respirator in the hospital. many newborns have these issues and it takes growth and maturity along with medical care to get them well. it not uncommon but it not something you can ignore, their lungs are just not mature enough yet.
