I know nothing about laptops but would like to buy a second hand or reconditioned one for me and and my ten year old son to use. Anyone got good suggestions. We have a pc at home which we use a lot for the internet but need to have mobile internet access.

Buying a second hand laptop is a risky business. Unlike a desktop PC, they are not easily repairable, often costing nearly as much as a new one to fix. Second hand and some refurbished laptops are also likely to have short guarantees. You can get a new one for less than £400. Dell at this price is with 90 day warranty, so you have to look out for this.

If your son plays games, some laptops and particularly older ones, do not support 3D graphics. Particularly older ones (like with Pentium 4 CPU) use a lot of power, tend to overheat and have short battery life between recharging.

If you identify a model at an acceptable cost, you might search on Internet to identify any problems, before you buy it.
