Only two teams have ever been promoted directly from the 3rd Division to the 1st Division. In 1992 when the Premiership was set up the old 1st Division became the Premiership, the 2nd became the 1st etc. The two teams that won the old 3rd Division one season started the next in the 1st Division. The two teams were Birmingham City and Brentford

Am i right to be thinking that you mean Arsenal in 03/04 and Preston North End in 1889 as the only teams to go a season unbeaten.
Arsenal managed to get 49 games unbeaten before finally Man Utd beating them.
Nottingham Forest managed 42 games unbeaten in 1978/99 too.
