Hmm, is it possible that you could give a little more detail? I know the area pretty well, but I just need more information as to where and what you are talking about....maybe more info on the location....was it on the side of the road?......how big....? You can message me and I will try to help you! Take care! :)

I don't know whether you are talking about the same whole I know but I tried to locate it on Google Earth. Here is the pic. http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=-29.81497&lon=30.972703&z=18.2&r=0&src=ggl It is said that some years ago this whole had coal, so they dug to get it. It was known as Umkhumbane. Since it was deserted rain water filled it over the years and today it looks like a scary dam. The road next to it is a freeway N2. Northwise it goes past Umhlanga Rocks and South-east there's Durban. Durban is home to me.

I know the area very well myself, I've lived there for a number of years now, but I just can't picture the area you are talking about. Where is this exactly? And maybe with all the developments in the area, it has disappeared as the Umhlanga area is overcrowded now, offices, simplexes, duplexes...

A hole in the ground near Umhlanga? Isn't that Durban?

Genuinely not trying to be mean asking this - but what stopped you ever taking a look to see what was there yourself?
