Eureka area. Beautiful, low cost of living, and bordering the Redwood forest. The ocean is not for swimming there, but it does offer some great lagoons and national parks. Almost any day at the Patrick's Point will let you view whales, sea lions or collect agates.
Eureka is mostly conservative.
If you are liberal, north of Eureka is the small town of Arcata.
If you don't care about local politics, Orick is north of Arcata, and no one cares about much more that chainsaw wood carving and Elk jerkey.

Portland. Moderate weather, little snow and usually enough rain to stay green. Decent airport, nice coast within easy reach, mountains and snow within easy reach and yet it seldom snows there. Housing is also still somewhat affordable. You might look just north into Washington state, there are tax advantages to each.
LA and Sandog are too dry and I just can't stand SoCal. NorCal is either horribly expensive or... well it just is, anywhere near SF is just ridiculous. You could go for Crescent City but that's rather remote, it's about a 6 hour drive to SF and there are no big airports up there.
Seattle has similar issues to SF, Microsoft has brought in a lot of money and the cost of living is way high. The traffic is also terrible.

check out website www.yubasutterchamber.com - the Yuba City area has affordable housing, it's 45 minutes from downtown Sacramento, 2 hours from S.F., the beach, in the other direction, 2 1/2 hours from snow skiing, reno, tahoe, so is smack in the middle of anything you could ever want. And all could be done on a day trip. Good jobs available for your husband, many community support groups to join/affiliate yourself with, every church I can think of, some great restaurants, lots of fast food, local shopping at reasonable prices, and if you're into fishing, the immediate area has some world class rated salmon and striper fishing - lots of lakes nearby, within 30 minutes - any other questions, just contact me through website www.featherriverlodge.com - good luck, honey!

well, it depends wat ur looking for. i live in california, and if you want theme parks and fun stuff to do that is a great place for you. ( south of ca) in the north of ca, it is a cooler temp and it has quite a beautiful scenery. waterfalls, camping outdoor things. if you like historical things then washington is great for you. there aer many historical places, but it can get quite chilly. i honestly dont know much about oregon, but i think either california or washington would be a good choice. if you want to go into more detail, i can give ideas for cities in ca. Los Altos/ Los Altos Hills is a peaceful area and very nice which means that is where the rich people live. Los Angeles is more noisy and outgoing.
i hope this helps! :)

Why would you want to leave Virginia and go to the west coast? The place is full of giant toads and weirdos. Stay where you are.

The coast is way to expensive. Head for Nevada or Arizona.
