I think it's silly how people obsess over it. We're all going to die eventually, so what's the big deal? If the world ends tomorrow, it just means we're dead a bit sooner than we expected.

We are so self-centred and arrogant that we believe the world means we the human beings ..... majority of answers indicate that assumption.
In my view, the world is the entire universe including ourselves as a small part in it. This world will end one day when space and time would become zero. This world exists because there are the space and time dimensions. If one believes in the Big-bang theory, I would say that the expansion would reach a critical limit of low density and reverse thereafter to a contraction phase where the gradually and steadily diminishing space and time would reach the state of zero in due course. Do they call it the oscillation theory .... doesn't matter what it is called.
There is another possibility ..... that there would be no end since there was no beginning so to say ...... the world has an eternal existence... it is a continuum which has no beginning and no end ... it just goes on and on changing continuously but all the time existing in one form or the other.
We are too small a part of this huge and complex system to ever have or acquire the ability to visualise or even conceptualise such grand ideas as the beginning of it all or the end of it all or the eternal existence of a continuum!!

My general idea about the end of the world is that it is going to end sometime. How is it going to end? Don't know, but I do know that lots and lots of ink has gone into looking at this. As the poet Robert Frost said:
"Some say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice;
From what I've tasted of desire;
I hold with those who favor fire;
But if it had to perish twice;
I think that for destruction;
Ice is also nice and would suffice."
If you don't like Frost's ideas, you could really scare yourself witless by taking a look at the views of some of the world's major religions about the end of the world:

I don't think I want to be around when any of this happens. Guess I had better start thinking about booking an interstellar flight to another planet just in case.

My observation reveals that the scientific activities of man on earth as over the years brought about easier, faster, better and more comfortable ways of living and carrying out of activities which is what mordernisation is all about however, from the period this scientific activities began there as been an increase in the occurrence of natural disasters in Asia, Europe and America which are industrialised areas and less of this disasters in Africa which is not so industrialised, there as been a significant increase in the occurence of diseases and advent of new and incurable diseases. There is equally the issue of the green house effect with it attending effects on the earth. By and large, the end of the world will be brought about by the scientific activities of man and the factors leading to this end will be from both within and without. Within, incurable diseases, weapons of mass destruction, natural disasters and pestilence and famine will bring about a significant reduction in the earth population. This will be comprehended from without by the ultraviolet rays of the sun and the earth will become unhabitable.

Ideed this world is composed of two matters. One is living matter the other one is physical matter( land, air , water).Definately, due to the extreme change in climate, diseases , destructive activities and other natural havoc, the world of living being may be destroyed completely. But so far the physical world is concerned, it won't be ended.Physical world is like an energy. Rather it can be changed into another form but no ends.

Friend - I believe there is an end to come. This old world has had many ends historically speaking. I do not spend a lot of time dwelling on what the end might be like or looking for signs of an impending end. I am aware there are a faction of people who are obsessed with the end. I do not live in denial, I live in today. GBY

It's the End of the World as we know it...
When did you think the world population would annihilate itself... i.e. bring about the End of the World... 2012! Yes... 2012 would announce the End of the World as it is today.
Imagine as of now... a world without computers and mobiles... what shall be the shape of the world to come... would it not mean the end of the world!
End of the world is not merely a saying; its implications would vary from place to place and country to country. Nostradamus predicted the End of the World in 1994, 1998 and also 2012. Why?
If the End of the World did not occur in 1998, it was merely because the entire population of the world sensing the impending danger of the world war engrossed itself in massive prayers... this led to the delaying of the End of the World as it is today!
Every passing day brings us nearer to End of the World. Why?
Even a layman can understand the catastrophe human beings are landing themselves in because of the breaking down of the family and the moral values in daily life. Literally the human beings as of today find indulgence in materialistic tendencies as humorous and entertaining.
The happenings in Iraq and Afghanistan are a testimony to this absolute truth. The end of the world shall accompany with itself a fight to the finish between Christianity and Islam.
End of the World is imminent for the trust between various countries, religions and castes is coming to an end. The faith lost shall only lead us towards the End of the World. There is no escape for the upheaval of the society is not possible without a looming World War 3.
Every revolution... every sacrifice carries with it the seed of the oncoming golden era. As of today when the manifest science is at its peak... in a short while from now and around 2012 we shall witness the End of the World... the most ghastly event that the humanity as of today shall face.
Who shall survive this End of the World phenomenon? Everyone... nay every human being for that matter who has a positive balance of Karma shall survive. One may witness a missile exploding at a short distance... the gods will shall save us from experiencing the rigors of the holocaust. Everyone with Punya Karma (positive balance of Karma) in balance shall experience a win-win situation. More here- http://www.godrealized.org/end_of_the_world.html

The world as we know it will not end as the life of it will not end, merely go through adaptation. No one knows from where comes the seed of life.

When our sun dies... the planet dies. Odds are that we will eliminate ourselves way before that. If you are talking about the end of the world in biblical terms...like everything else in the bible, is a story to keep people living in fear and in control of the church.
