007 is the codename of James Bond.
Remember, James bond is a fictional spy agent so he needs a codename in other to hide his identity from enemies and to reveal his true identity to friends.
But why the number 007 and not any other? :
There are various thoughts for this:
1. It is popularly assumed that he is the 7th agent with a 'licence to kill'.
2. Some say 007 is a Cipher, the two circles symbolised his own two eyes as well as indicating that he was the secret eyes of the Queen. According to historian Richard Deacon, the two circles are guarded by what may be considered a square root sign.
3. Some say the number is indeed sacred in occult belief:
"... In Revelation there are 7 churches, 7 candlesticks, 7 stars, 7 angels, 7 vials, 7 seals, 7 thunders, 7 plagues and 7 spirits of God; the Lamb has 7 horns and 7 eyes, the dragon 7 heads and 7 crowns, and the beast has 7 heads etc; etc;

James bond is a detective....and his Secret code is 007........Hi! this is not internet Sawaal.by the way Except for the novel You Only Live Twice, where he temporarily becomes "7777" license to kill". The 7 is just a serial number. The are more 00 agents out there, some of them are mentioned in the movies like 003 and 008, and James Bond happened to be number 7.

As an agent of the Secret Service, Bond holds code number "007," except for in You Only Live Twice, where he temporarily becomes "7777". The "double-0" prefix indicates his discretionary licence to kill in the performance of his duties.

Ganesh is closest so far. Double O status for a British spy (according to Ian Fleming) is a license to unquestionable kill. Bond is number 7 granted this status. So, he is agent 007

The number 007 denotes the licence to kill anyone. I have read somewhere that the person having it can kill anyone and he won't be questioned by anybody.

According to script, one is alive, others may or may not be, they have shown 008, getting killed, 007 then would be, seventh super British secret agent, still kicking.

justbrowsin has it right....Ian Fleming was quite precise that a "license to kill" on behalf of HM government was a rare and special thing, given out only to a few special agents at any one time.Cmdr J Bond, RN was the 7th to hold that license.
