From the formation of Iraq, done as it was by and for oil interests primarily of British and American concerns, Iraq has been a mess. Hussein was backed in the 70s and 80s by the same groups that later derived whatever false claims were necessary in the confused patriotic fervor following 9/11 as a basis for the invasion and occupation that has led to the current civil war beginnings in Iraq. The mess our foreign policy has created is so large that the problems in Iraq can spill over those borders engulfing the whole Gulf region.

Hard to comment as I don't know the "American Foreign Policy".

What I will say is that America interferes in a lot of places over time. The consequences are not always bad and they are not always good.

There are lots of speculation as to why but we will never know.

Plus the situation is so complex you would have to be an American to think that it was caused by America. The world does not revolve around the US.

The result of this policy, I think, was like this: Iraq is considered to be a poor little helpless child, and the US like a nasty monster torturing this baby for occasionally pissing in the pants...

I don't think it was so much the policy as much as the completely incompetent way in which America went about doing things. It is pretty hard when you claim to be the good guys and allow things like Abu Ghraib to happen.

the american policy of never trusting any other government seems to have backfired in Iraq

I could be sarcastic but I won't.
Nothing the US has done in Iraq has accomplished anything worthwhile. The siutation today is far far worse than it was under Saddam. I hold Bush and his neocon junta accountable.
