AS400 is an age old IBM system, first produced in 1988. IBM has removed all the information from the web.

An AS/400 is a midrange computer, for high-availability (24/7), secure, multi-user environments. It's also called a System i, or an iSeries. The operating system is called OS/400. The control language is called CL. They are programmed in several computer languages, and support many varied operating systems and interfaces.

Most medium to large national companies, banks, and businesses use at least one AS/400 for overall inventory, national business transactions, and networking. Individual users can access them through PCs or Macs, or even through dedicated terminals. They are also used as webservers.

System storage is measured in GB or TB.
1,024 MB = 1 Gigabyte
1,024 GB = 1 Terabyte

Global businesses either use mainframes or downsize from mainframes to individual AS/400s for each country in their portfolio.

Many smaller and less costly systems are used to run local office networks and front-end applications, but these are less secure, less reliable and less robust, and can lack compatibility with other proprietary systems, often including planned obsolescence as a feature : )
