I came across an article that said schools are having DNA tests taken for all of the children in case they were abducted.

I was thinking that abduction is just an excuse to get everyone's DNA on file starting when they are children, so that we are one step closer to Big Brother.

What do you think?

This is scary. Scary because, as a parent, it sounds so good. Abduction is such a horrible thing, and scares the sh** out of all of us. But........ Big brother is a threat to all of us, whether we've committed a crime or not. Big brother isn't about the "law", so much as, controlling everything we do. It scares me that people think big brother is about catching criminals! That is not what big brother will end up being about, it will end up being about loosing our basic freedoms. DNA samples ---- so good, yet so bad.......

You are paranoid, obviously not a parent and just looking for some excuse to find something to tie to the "Big Brother Is Out To Trap You" conspiracy theory.

It must also bother you that they take their fingerprints or digital photo's. How about keeping dental records on file for identification purposes. I wonder how many times a mystery has been solved by having a set of fingerprints on file for some child. I wonder how many victims of crimes or accidents have been identified with the use of dental records. If the thought of DNA sampling bothers you then certainly fingerprinting, picture taking and dental records being used should as well. How ridiculous.

I am certainly not a professional where DNA is involved but it makes sense to me to have a perfect sample on file somewhere for immediate access rather than to have to take the time to have to find an uncontaminated sample when you are working against the clock in certain situations. It takes time to successfully test for DNA.

This is a voluntary program where the parents decide whether or not they want to do this. Also, the parents have the option on whether or not to turn the samples over to be entered into a database or they can keep the samples themselves and turn them over to authorities only when something happens.

Read the article again and this time pay attention to what it says.

Shame on you for trying to mislead people.

I think it's always a hard choice between safety and freedom.
I choose freedom over safety any day, but I usually use this as a litmus test for questions like this:

How could this be abused in general?
If the people controlling this system turned against me, how could they use it?

For public video surveillance and implanted transponders I see very clear cases where it would give the baddies a severe advantage. So pretty much no public safety argument will win me over on that one.

For a database of DNA, I don't really see how it could work that directly against me.

On the other hand, I would think that if you have the parents of the child who has been abducted, you would still be able to get DNA material that should somehow match up to the child.

In the end, I think it should be up to the parents, not the schools.

How in the world will DNA help track down a child when abducted?

Why don't they promote it saying "incase you are dead in a ditch, we want to make sure it's really you".

And they are already capable of doing that, so it makes no sense to endorse it on the grounds of "for your protection".

NO, for sure, people need to get out of the mindset that you need not be afraid unless you are doing something wrong.

We are people, we can be doing something "wrong" all the time for all we know depending on which way the law turns.

I personally think this DNA supposedly collected for government, is more than likely going to be collected for corporate interest.
Because after all, the corporations own our government, they are corporations' bi*ch.
So, it's going to be held, tested and manipulated, they will collect data on us and then the information will be sold to corporations in league with the government.
Maybe they want to see how sufficiently kids DNA has been manipulated due to heavy vaccination in childhood.
And they want to create more "products" to keep the people dependent on the system-- our government and our corporations want lifetime customers!

I'm for it. It'll just give people another reason why it's best to follow the rules and laws. As far as Big Brother, the only thing that bothers me is having them know exactly were I am at all times but with this DNA thing, it's not like they'll be able to uplink to a satalite and pin point where you are on the Earth.

Big Brother is no threat unless you commit an illegal act and the DNA is used to track you down. Personally, I think its a GREAT Idea.

I think we could consider it Big Brother until one of our children get abducted, then it would be a godsend.

its an invasion of privacy and should be combatted, while some say you have nothing to fear if you are law abiding, they need to recall others who claimed that such as Joe Stalin, Adolf Hitler & Saddem Hussien!
