Frederich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher although he was actually born in Prussia. He was far less well known during his life than he is now. He wrote much on "will", but his current influence derives not only from his celebrations of the will, but more deeply from his scepticism about the notions of truth and fact. In particular, he anticipated many of the important ideas of "postmodernism". The ultimate outcome of this was a down grading of the belief in the power of reason nd the politicization of discourse.

A superficial understanding can often lead a reader to concerns about anti-Semitism and misogyny in his writings. But his philosophy is many-layered and often ironic, so overt readings of his intent are often mistaken.

Some of his major works are:

Human All too Human (1880)
The Wanderer and His Shadow (1880)
Thus Spake Zarathustra (1885)
Beyond Good and Evil (1887)
The Genealogy of Morals (1889)
Behold the Man (1890)

Nietzsche met a tragic end. He collapsed on a street in Turin, Italy, unable to bear the sight of a horse being flogged, and the remaining years of his life he was clinically insane. His sister used Nietzsche's helplessness during his last year to misrepresent his ideas and to present him as a precursor of Nazism, which he certainly was not.

Fredrick (without the 'e') Nietzsche has been unfairly associated with Nazism because Hitler expropriated him for propaganda purposes. He is a highly regarded philosopher that had asked some profound questions about life and society.
