1.Increase RAM (if possible)
2.Upgrade CPU (if possible)
3.Reduce the applications running in background
start ... run...type msconfig go to start up tab and uncheck applicfations you don't need to start when windows starts

I found it very useful.
5.I was about to forget this one :) right click on my computer icon, select properties and go to advanced tab. Under performance area click settings. In visual effects tab check adjust for best performance. Click apply and then OK
