Nobody can answer your second part, if they try its just theory. They know it, I wont try to explain it either.
Its against all logical thinking to just say..."the universe isnt expanding into something..", it has to be though what nobody knows. A ballon is a very good way to describe this motion, but still can't explain what "it" pushes into.
If there is "nothing" beyond the universe, then are we inside of some containment?
The idea that there is an end has still not been taken out of the equation...(Jan 21, 2002 Steven Haking lecture on Alternate Times @ Cambridge), he states that since we see into the universe more and more with technology, we see motion and activity as a guage that can tell us timelines of occurrences of the past, and can calculate distances and measure the speed at which these activities take place. And so he goes on to say that if given these calculations are correct, we can measure the entire universes' movement and therefore determine with some confidence where the edge would be, or should be. But, he said, so far we cant find an edge, though if we did, in all probability the universe is pushing itself into another adjacent universe.
If it were to be found someday that our universe has an edge, and theres a chance to peer past it....he says, then at least "containment" theory is off the table.

Your question implies that you think the Big Bang was an explosion in space.. It was really an explosion OF space, which is why you can't see the outer perimeter (so to speak). The background radiation is uniform in all of the observable universe and not shooting from a central point in space like a typical explosion in space. Another way of saying this is that no matter where you're located, the universe is expanding away from you.

hi,
Big bang theory proves that the universe is expanding. here some of the lines of big bang theory...
all matter in the universe was concentrated in a very dense and very hot premeval nucleus at the beginning. a cosmic explosion occured some 20yrs ago and the matter was thrown out in the form of galaxies. the galaxies are continously moving away frm each other. the distance between the galaxies will continoually increase and space will grow more and more empty. the hydrogen in each galaxy will be gradually used up and the galaxies will fade out completely. in the end the universe will be devoid of all matter, energy and life. it expands upto infinity.

It is humankind's inability to comprehend time and space which leads us to place limitations on them.
The universe is a single-ended object. Do you know any others? The reason I say this is because each and every one of us experiences the universe through our senses....right? So, our universe begins with us, (where we are now) and extends out in every "direction".
Okay, so if we "move" to another room, the beginning of our universe "moves" with us. I mean, you still experience it from where you are, and the universe still extends out in every direction. So, if you travel into space a zillion miles, the beginning of your universe goes with you. It is kind of like chasing the end of a rainbow....the closer you get, the further away it moves. So, nobody can ever get to the other end of their universe, because wherever they are will be the "start" of their universe.
Anyway, the upshot is that time and space are human creations which don't concur with reality.
Hope this helps.

When we say the universe we aren't just referring to all the stars and matter, we are referring to the spacial dimensions and time. SPACE is expanding, so to speak. And so it isn't expanding into anything, because there's nothing else there. No space, no time... nothing.

I agree in theory with billy. I disagree with cosmicvoyager's metaphysical options of creation (his assumption is that something like the Andromeda galaxy exists because we WILLED it to be there !?!). There exists no answer on your question. Our information of our properly-known Universe remains in that's infancy degrees. What you receives in accordance on your question is evaluations, knowledgeable guesses, hypotheses, and theories. What you pick to understand is an similar element that scientists, astronomers, astrophysicists, and almost each and every human being contained in the international would pick to understand. we favor to earnings a lot extra about the Universe previously we can recommend any statements with any fact. the placement with maximum theoretical ideas which attempt to respond to the questions you advance is that none of them will be recreated in a laboratory. the huge Bang isn't a problematical and quick idea yet truly an ongoing procedure wherein scientists attempt to understand typical relativity for spacetime and quantum idea for remember. Even in the huge Bang idea there are a spread of theories as to the way it got here about and what got here about. The Inflationary idea, Hawking's cosmology, and others. we favor to earnings extra about the guidelines of thermodynamics and how they function interior very large gravitational fields in the time of singularity. it isn't properly-known if the Universe is open or closed so the question of what there became previously the huge Bang also won't be able to be responded. it would want to were created out of no longer something or it would want to were created out of a hydrogen-helium mix. via confusing complications in contact, time won't be able to immediately be calculated to the starting up the position time=0. for this reason, time previously the huge Bang is likewise unknown. All you probable can do is learn and evaluate the theories and settle on for oneself which to believe and which to disagree with depending upon what's authentic depending upon contemporary information and the suppositions and conjectures that amplify from those information.

If you have heard of Doppler's effect :- it states that the frequency of waves emnating from a source change with its relative velocity to an observer i.e. if the source of sound is moving away from you its pitch decreases and vice-versa.
Spectral analysis reveals that the light from stars shifts to the higher end of the electromagenetic spectrum precisely to the red and infra-red ranges .Since their wavelength is more than that for visible radiation ,it indicates that the frequency of electro-magnetic signals received from the stellar bodies is decreasing i.e. they are moving further apart from us.hence, the universe is expanding.
This is referred to as the 'red-shift'.
