Over time Windows suffers from "bloat" little bits of leftover programs and files that scatter all through your system and generally slow things down .... no amount of software will remove all of this debris ... and some such as Norton System Works only add to your problem ... the only sure fire solution is to do a complete fresh install of Windows and start from scratch
Good Luck :)

In my opinion, the secret to Windows performance is to remove, not to add.
Remove any thing you can from the System Tray (next to the clock on the Task Bar.) This often requires right-clicking on the icon, then choosing "settings" or "options" from the menu. With any luck you'll find a way to turn of "show icon in system tray" or "run when Windows starts."
You might also want to delete any .tmp files in your temporary directory. It's probably C:\Documents and Settings\__user__\Local Settings\Temp. (Show hidden files and folders will need to be turned on to do this using Windows Explorer.)
If you have:
1) A way to back up all your important data
2) High-speed internet for re-installing the updates
3) Access to the CDs for Windows and the rest of your software
4) Half-a-day to spend
You could always back up your data, reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows. Then it will truly be back to the way it was when it was new.
Good luck!

Your asking to much here Buddy... depending on your PC age that's how it would perform, and if you dint want to upgrade your memory its not going to perform any better with any software... so if you got like 64MB of memory (that's just old my grandmas PC has more than that) she is 68... you can try to clean all the junk and maybe that would work but if you want the best result clean the whole thing, meaning install Windows fresh.

I agree with all 3 posts above but I particularly agree with Dead Kelly. An OS reinstall is the surest way of making your system fast again. You should have at least 20-25% free on all partitions, hard disk space affects speed quite a bit.
It would help if you posted your system specs.

Regular maintenance ie:disc defrag, delete temp files, check disc...all of these should help. Remove any unused programs and use msconfig to shut down any programs running in the background or at start up to free up system resources.

your computer starts running slowly because as you gradually install new applications, you are leaving some unimportant files and entries in the registry..
