The Parque Central in Havana is the best hotel in my opinion. I stayed there last month. It's right in the centre of old Havana, and near loads of attractions. On the first night we arrived really late and were just going to go to bed, but when we opened the doors of our patio we could hear all the sounds in the street and it sounded so exciting we ended up going out.
The hotel is not very "Cuban" at all. Is like any European hotel, and quite posh inside. If you want something more "authentic" then go somewhere else. Personally we found that we spent all day seeing "authentic" Cuba, and it was quite nice, after a day of hard sight-seeing, to come back to somewhere like the Parque Central. Also, it has a swimming pool and bar on the roof. Go up there for a drink and great views of the city. (In fact, there are not many places you can go in Havana for a rooftop view of the city, and at Parque Central, you have one right in your hotel)
Check out http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g147271-d151444-Reviews-NH_Parque_Central-Havana_Cuba.html for reviews of the hotel and pictures. People have voted it the best hotel in Havana
The hotel is expensive, and drinks and food from the bar are expensive by UK standards, let alone Cuban, but, if you can afford it, go there!
The National Hotel in Cuba is also nice (went there for a drink), and has a bit more history, but the location of Parque Central is better for a tourist.
If you want something a bit cheaper, and slightly more Cuban, try the Hotel Raquel. Again a good location. We were thinking of staying there, but it was fullly booked.
All these hotels, and others, are reviewed by loads of people on TripAdvisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g147271-Havana_Cuba-Hotels.html

When I was in Cuba I stayed at the Hotel Tejadillo in Old Havana. It was marvellous-right next to the Plaza Cathedral and a block away from La Bodeguita Del Medio which Hemingway visited, and within walking distance of plenty of other bars, restaurants and El Malecon boardwalk.
It was very beautiful and very 'Cuban' with traditional funiture and decoration and the room that I stayed in had a kitchenette with a microwave and mini refrigerator. It had a wonderful courtyard and a fountain and plenty of comfy chairs in the lobby and on the patios to sit and read and listen to the neighbourhood music. And there were individual air-conditioning units in every room (which was wonderful in the summer!) There was music and dancing in the bar downstairs at night and free breakfast in the morning with your stay. The cleaning service was fantastic everything was so clean-the towel arrangements were so cute!
There were also personal safes in the room as well if you wanted them.
Sadly there was no pool, but I experienced first hand swimming in the ocean with Cubans-and that was so much better than any pool! And some of the rooms don't have windows, so ask when you want a view. My room didn't have a window and I wasn't bothered in the least-like I said we had air conditioning and if we were in the room, sometimes we had the door propped open.
It was smaller and a little bit off the beaten path- which I think it best when you want to get to know a city. It was close to a lot of things, but not in the thick of it.
The staff of the hotel was FANTASTIC, they really took care of our whole group.
I loved this hotel-I REALLY recommend it to anyone.

The Parque Central and Saratoga both have rooftop pools. The Saratoga's was listed as one of the five best in the world by the UK Guardian. I have never investigated the Cohiba or Riviera's pools. Many of the hotels to the west have pools - such as the Occidental, Panorama, Palco. The Occidental has a big multilevel pool, but it lacks shade. The Panorama tends to get crowded. I like the Palco.

in terms of grandeur, history and elegence, the "hotel nacional de cuba" is the only 1 you could stay in. It is the only hotel famous people stay in when in havana. It is not smack in the middle of havana, in fact its more in the resedential areas of havana, but i think thats a plus thing. when you go to foreign places, its cool to mingle with the locals and go to the locals bars and eateries. Its not cheap(5* hotels aren't!), but you obviously pay for what you get.

Try Mazorra Resort and Spa. Just be careful with strong electrical circuitry.
