Hey: No one has mentioned Epson yet!
Milo: You need to have more specific requirements to get a good answer.
Are you running XP or 2000? (Those are the only Operating systems that Dell Printers support.)
Do you need the printer to fax (without a computer,) or is Windows built-in faxing service OK?
Same for copying. Some copy without the computer hooked up.
As for scanning, I haven't found an All-In-One Printer yet that didn't do a good job. They use different programs, however, and you may like one over another.
Most of the new ones: (HP Dell Lexmark) come with 1 color cartridge and print black by mixing the 3 colors--called process black. Some people are not happy with the greyish, sometimes greyish green letters! HP's usually let you add a black cartridge. You can also get an older Dell or Lexmark that uses both cartridges.
I am currently using the Dell A920 (same as the Lexmark X1150, similar to X1185 & X2250) that uses 2 cartridges. I have modified my printer to use the Lexmark cartridges, also. I refill my own ink, so this printer works great for me!
Meanwhile, back to the Epson. This is my personal favorite for outputting the best color pictures, including photos. I just retired the ill fated CX5400 (it had problems with the printheads clogging) and have upgraded to the RX620. Real Epson ink is expensive because you can change the colors individually (4 on the CX5400 and 6 on the RX620.) I buy my ink on ebay for 80% less cost!
Speaking of cost, a Lexmark can be had for under $60 (the X2350) and the #1 ink cartridge will print 200 pages before you need to put another in, or refill it. Epsons start at $100 to $300.
HP's are under $100. Dell's are under $100.
If you were looking at Canon because they don't chip their ink cartridges--think again. The refiller's nightmare has just begun!
eMail me if you want more information on any Printer mentioned above!

After having a Lexmark X1150 all-in a single(scanner, copier, printer)for a pair of years right here in Thailand the final time I went to purchase ink i spotted that the extra contemporary all-in a single variety X1270 replaced into in basic terms slightly costlier than new ink so I upgraded to the recent variety which does each thing and does it nicely and it in basic terms expenditures between £30 to £40 reckoning on the place you shop.

I have a Canon MP390 - It has had 1 problem in 3 years - but the repair service is excellent from their centre in Luton.
I think if you are investing in a good printer like this you need also to consider the support and repair service for later on.
