There are many commercial programs available, NetNanny, CyberPatrol, Dave's Guardian (which is free, not commercial, but there is a commercial license available which I don't recall what it is called). Ironically, some adult sites have decent listings of such software. I currently use CyberPatrol (http://www.cyberpatrol.com), which requires a yearly subscription of about $40. It let's you set a master password, have different profiles, different types of control (adult/sexually explicit, violence, guns, alchohol, lingerie, racially derogotory, hacking, etc.) and different levels for each type. You can also set time restrictions. Such software is imperfect, and there will be some sites that can still be accessed, but a large majority of them will be restricted. And yes, there will be some harmless sites blocked, but you can add them to an allowed list, or use a 'bypass' feature.

Most of the answers here are unhelpful. The best one is that you can't avoid adult sites.

Any increasing of security within the browser will also limit functionality and require your intervention.

The best solution I have heard is to put the kid's computer in a location in the house where it is visible by others. Don't put it in his room.

I have tried an older version of Net Nanny. It was useless. you might try a newer version.

I have just given up on a current version of Watchdog. While it controls time on the system well, it doesn't do any of the other things I have asked it to do like monitoring keystrokes and preventing the user from stopping the Watchdog process.

Good Luck

p.s. It is wrong to say that the Internet could not exist without adult sites. It did for a long time. The Internet would actually work better without them as they consume so much bandwidth.

there are programs that you can purchase that will block questionable material. my aunt and uncle have it on their computer. sometimes it is somewhat annoying because it sometimes blocks sites that aren't inapropriate. but i'm sure there is some way to allow those sites with a password or something. i would definitely suggest purchasing the software to protect your children.

You cannot avoid the adult sites. There is no software to prevent it.
