Not sure...but I think eye lashes serve the purpose of acting as protective barrier of keeping dust, etc. particles from landing on the delicate surface of eye.

Eyelashes provide natural protection from sunshine, wind and foriegn bodies and function same as whiskers in cats or any other animal. they are sensitive towards foriegn objects and show a reflexive action when any insect is nearby.
