The original GTA is my favorite.
First off, GTA is a very hard game... 1 bullet hit and you're done for. 4 if you're lucky enough to find body armor. There's also an endless amount of things to do in the game. Of course the same can be said about every GTA game made since then, but the first GTA was unique at the time. It provides the simplistic shoot-'em-up gameplay of a side-scrolling arcade shooter, coupled with the freedom and vast array of objectives that matches modern RPGs.
In my opinion, being able to finish the final level of GTA is among one of the hardest video game achievements of all time. All the missions are potential suicides, and you don't have the luxury of safe-houses like you do in GTA III / VC / SA, so you have to play the entire thing without saving. It's very intense.
There's certainly nothing wrong with the newer series of GTA games, but it's really hard to compete with the original GTA.

San Andreas. There's lot to do e.g. gym, dating, stunts, restaurants, etc. And a whole lot of missions and vehicles compared to previous titles.
