Could be a lot of things cooling system related, from a simple five dollar fix to a few hundred in new parts depending on what needs to be replaced. Bent radiator fins, clogged radiatior, bad radiator cap, bad water pump, bad thermostat, bad heater control bypass valve, bad heater core... If it leaks coolant, you need to find the leak and fix it. If it's an older vehicle, the cooling passages in the block could be restricted due to build up. Pressure test the radiator, check your water pump, radiator cap, thermostat and bypass valve. If there all good, backflush the cooling system normally, then backflush the block using a high pressure system and block flush (don't use this on the whole cooling system, it will destroy your hoses and heater core). It may also damage one or more freze plugs if they're bad, but if they are, they need to be replaced anyway. I've seen this happen for a lot of reasons, even from replacing a radiator cap with one that has the incorrect pressure rating.

First, check your radiator fan...sounds like it isn't working. Second, flush your cooling system...sounds like it has a clog. Third, before you refill your cooling system, put in a new thermostat. This should take care of your problems unless your radiator is completely plugged up. Oh, lastly, try your best to ensure that all of the bugs are cleaned out of the radiator and condensor and that you have maximum airflow through the grill of your car. Good luck.

you need to replace the thermostat it is not opening up to give the engine coolant. you may also need to flush out the cooling system at a shop with a stem cleaning device.
