It is believed to show the clock looking best. You can see both hands and it does look like its smiling.
This only applies to ads and catalogue photos. It doesnt where the clock is just a prop or bit of background.

There are two accepted reasons.
1.) It allows you to see all the features on the watch face clearly - so it's not obscured by the watch hands. For example, some watches have date and time at 3pm, if the watch hand was there, you would not be able to see it.
2.) It makes the watch look like it's smiling which subliminally makes you happier.

Sometimes the publicity pictures for products get printed back to front. if the hands are set at 10:10, the picture looks the same no matter what way round it's printed.

my name is Kenny but Kenny is a hard name to pronounce for a baby.
when i was little i tried to say Ken-ken but it came out ten-ten
so now 10:10 is my favorite time of the day and I have a mysterious knack for seeing exactly that time twice a day, after not looking at a clock for hours

Guys, watch producers and engaged with this business just think that watches look more better in this way. Do you like 5.30? Personally, I like 10:10. More attractive.

They are set like that so that the hands frame the 12 o'clock and the name on the face is still visible.

Yes, it makes it as if the clock is smiling.
Also, from what my mom told me, it's 10.10 and thus, it means a perfect ten, that it's perfect. Good 'feng-shui' kind of thing. Good vibes.
