I am stationed in Germany and am pregnant with a Gastrobaby. The Army won't send me back to the States so I am trying to find the best hospital here that can do it. I am in the Kaiserslautern area, but don't care how far I have to go for the best care for him. (FYI: Military hospital (Landstuhl) cannot do his surgery).

My Landstuhl doc is referring with Homburg. I guess I just want to make sure he's getting the best.

The doctors up at Landstuhl didn't refer you to anyone? Wierd. I would have thought they would. I'm actually a bit surprised that they can't do the surgery, they seem to handle so much up there. There is a University of Saarland hospital in Homberg (30 minutes from Ramstein, direction Trier) that might be able to help. Or at least give you German doctors that could help. Just google university of saarland or ask Tricare for the numbers.

I think Saarland is a good hospital. My husband had his vasectomy reversal there. They took wonderful care of him and the prices were good. I also didn't have any trouble finding someone that could speak English and German.

Hello. I'm not too sure what Gastroschisis is. But I am also in Germany..(Vogelweh Housing) just had my baby September 29. I've had previous EARLY preemie babies, and the doctors told me that since I was high risk I was able to see a doctor at Landstuhl. If not, I had to go off base. Prolly what they told you as well. But I've been told there is a good hospital here about 30 mintues away. It's a university. Well, have any question..feel free to email me.

That's a rare condition. Gastroschisis is a birth defect in which an infant is born with some or all of his/her intestines on the outside of the abdomen due to an abnormal opening in the abdominal muscle. Genetic disorders are caused by the mutation of a gene. This genetic mutation can be passed from parents to a child. Whether the child will develop the genetic disorder depends on the pattern of inheritance for the disorder. Soon after birth, your child will have surgery to close the opening in the abdominal wall and return the organs to the abdomen. The pediatric surgeon attempts to close the opening at the time of surgery, but sometimes this is not possible. If the gastroschisis is too large, a silo is placed. A silo is a covering placed over the abdominal organs on the outside of the baby. Gradually, the organs are squeezed by hand through the silo into the opening and returned to the body. This method can take up to a week. Babies with gastroschisis can stay in the hospital from 2 weeks to 3-4 months. Because your baby's intestine has been floating in amniotic fluid for months, it is swollen and does not function well. The return of the function of the gastrointestinal tract and the baby's ability to tolerate feedings are two factors which determine the length of stay in the hospital. Babies are discharged from the hospital when they are taking all their feedings by mouth and gaining weight. After discharge from the hospital, your baby has a small risk for developing bowel obstruction due to scar tissue or a kink in a loop of bowel. Symptoms of bowel obstruction include: 1) bilious (green) vomiting, 2) a bloated stomach, and 3) no interest in feeding. If any of these symptoms occur, you should contact your pediatrician immediatealy.
