It is my understanding that in Iran President Amenidijad (can't spell it), despite his high-profile image, is not really calling the shots in Iran, since President is more of a symbolic post there. The Supreme Leader decides everything (the more low-profile Khameini). If this is true, then why does the press act like Amenidijad is at the helm in Iran?

The Iranian president has power over the day to day affairs of the country, the supreme leader has the final say in all matters. Iran is a theology and everything has to conform to their version of Islam. The supreme leader, Ayatollah Khameini, is the supreme religious figure and thus the highest authority in the country.
That Iranian system is complex yet simple. Everything has to be "Islamically correct" and thus the religious leaders have immense powers and can and do interfere in most affairs.
That's the shortest answer i can give.

When the hard-line Ahmadinejad came into power, his fiery rhetoric - ridiculous and outrageous at times (such as questioning/denying the Holocaust could have taken place during WWII, and wanting to wipe Israel off the map) - proved a boon for Bush policies and propaganda efforts.

One can't expect the media to downplay "frontpage news".

the President is a spokesperson and can be criticized but Khomeini doesn't make the public rhetoric and therefore is not criticized
