Try visiting epodunk.com to find out more about certain places/cities in the us. I travel 10 months out of the year all over the us and have lived everywhere..... Here are the most inexpensive that I've seen thus far. Baton Rouge, but because of hurricane katrina I'm not so sure anymore because of the influx of people. Wichita KS, the air capital of the world, not a bad place, boring and somewhat conservative, but cheap. Many areas in the South and the Midwest are going to be the most inexpensive and of course the smaller the town. A bigger city that is pretty cool and not too expensive yet is Minneapolis...somewhat cosmopolitan without the pretentiousness of a big/big city.. and a great college too (UofM). Spokane in Washington is a rather inexpensive city while being close to the west coast.....as is Sacramento, CA. Of course college towns galore out there are usually intellectually stimulating while having a fun atmostphere: lawrence, KS...gainesville, FL... cour de alene, ID ... davis, CA ... burlington, VT .....durham, NC ... & durango, CO to name a few. Kansas City is kind of like Minneapolis, but a bit more midwestern. Good Luck and email me with any specific questions... Jack

we are seniors and have researched this question. The South is the least expensive place to live. We chose Alabama. . I am from the south and have lived in several southern states. My husband is from California and lived in Washington for many years. I lived in Alabama for nearly 20 years. Homes are reasonable and property taxes are low.....if you are still in the work force, wages are also low.

ratio:
Very cheap to live - very low pay
What overheat costs do you want or not?
Higher air conditioning bills / heating bills?
City life or way out in the country?

For certain anywhere near a big city will cost more,, however the jobs tend to pay more. If you are just talking about a stats for a house, south and south west away from larger cities.

There are many options to your question ... doing a little research I came across CNN Money. They have a list of the best places to live. There is actually a little graph on the right side of the sight for you to click in what is most important to you & the sight will come up with recommendations.
