Reflecting the characteristics , objectives and profiles of a group of things, living or non living, the representative must be idetifiable with the whole of the group. In other words , he /she/it represents all the others.

On a lighter note , for the readers , I may say that in our parts of the world , where rice is cooked on earthern pot, with wood as fuel, the cook will keep checking whether rice is well cooked. This is checked by physically taking one cooked grain by the finger and pressing it. The saying goes. " To test whether all grains in the pot are cooked it is enough to test one REPRESENTATIVE grain.
