Does anyone know the name of an older french book with the main character/hero is named Rene'? If possible, I need to find this book asap. Thanks!

I feel fairly certain that you are looking for Rene by Francois Rene de Chateaubriand. It was published in 1802 and had a profound influence on French Romantic literature. It was a classic of French literature and was published just after the French Revolution in reaction to that dark period in French history.

Gee, could be several. Could the author be Stendhal? "The Red and the Black," perhaps.
I'm sure Colette had a Rene in some of her books, many of which were a kind of series.
Then there's Zola.
and Balzac, of course.
I'm curious to know if someone knows a specific answer.

I agree it is probably the novel “René” (1802) by François René Vicomte de Chateaubriand, a founder of romanticism in French literature. it's a tragic love story.
