Actually a pap smear can detect the growth of cancer cells. Sexually active or not, should there be the slight chance of female related cancer in your family line, a pap smear is very wise for value of your health. Just a few decades ago the school of thought was that a pap smear wasn't necessary until you became sexually active. Think of this...a body part is a body part. You let a doctor look in your ear, nose, throat...well your vaginal canal is simply another body part...so what. Doctors are trained and very compassionate of each persons individual experiences and / or times frames in life...in your case a virgin and concerned about hurt. Trust in a doctors skills, and if it does 'hurt', it will only be for moment, you can handle that, just spoil yourself after with a time with your friends, a bath and give yourself a heart hug for caring enough about yourself to get a all over check up. Body parts are body party...doctors are trained...trust them to do their job...then pamper yourself after with a nice meal, dessert, or bath.

Maybe you could make an appointment and go in a talk to the nurse practictioner. First appointment talk about what will be done and discuss your fears. It really is no big deal. There is a little discomfort and pressure and it is over in about 30 seconds. It is your responsibility as a woman to care for yourself. Annual pap smears save lives catching cervical cancer in early stages. You really should get your pains checked out. I know you say you don't much care about cancer, but if you have it you may think differently. You said you were scared of a pap smear, so do I take it that you are not scared of dying???? Think about it! Love yourself and take care of yourself!!!

A pap smear is recommended yearly starting when women are aged 18 years, or when they become sexually active if younger than 18 years. Physicians may screen a woman less frequently if she had negative Pap smear results 3 years in a row or is not sexually active.
I had one before I was sexually active because I was having severe cramping with my periods. It didn't hurt, it was just a little uncomfortable. I've had many since then (after becoming sexually active and from being pregnant) and they didn't hurt any more than when I was still a virgin. Just don't worry. If you are still worried it will hurt though, take some Motrin before.
Good luck :)

I had mine done the first time three months back. At first I felt like I wanted to run out of the doctor's office. But then I told myself that it was now or never. In the end it wasn't too bad. It didn't really hurt like I had imagined. There was no bleeding in my case, either.
The good news is, if you're a virgin then you don't really need a pap smear yet. But you'll need one once you've become sexually active. So, horray!

i think of it quite is in basic terms a needed factor in the u . s .. They do a blood attempt for STD's yet additionally they can tell alot from a pap, they verify for weird and wonderful cells and cervical adjustments in early being pregnant. I dont think of that's a good sized deal even although they do yet another factor comparable to a pap b/t 32-37weeks called a set B attempt the place they swab your female factors and farther down- ugh to envision ofr an infection that many females carry that could reason important probs for babe if no longer dealt with earlier/in the process transport.

Hi Coll, We all hate to go through a pap test.I have and 2 children, and it still is uncomfortable for me. Why we go through this,is to make sure we don't have some form of cancer or some other disease. This is only to protect us. If i was you,i would set up an appointment to have this done. You should have this done once a year. A Friend.

We all hate it. It's so quick then you can run out of the office and hopefully not see the doctor for another year. Just do it. It's really important. If anything goes wrong w/ our bodies the chances are it's that region. It won't hurt more because you're a virgin. You should have one before you have sex at least.

by all means you should have a pap smear. you should have a vaginal exam to make sure that uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are healthy and with no abnomalities. It's good to have a baseline picture of what's normal to you. First papsmears are always scary the first time. They are almost always painless, especially when you are relaxed. Go to a doctor that you feel comfortible with. Alot of young women prefer to go to a female doctor. Alot of gynecologists post pictures, cartoons, and jokes on the ceiling above the table to take your mind of whats going on. have a visit to the doctor just to discuss your fears and have your questions answered. It's not as bad as you think.

You really should see a gyno. Talk with him or her, let them know you are afraid of the exam and most will be very understanding and as gentle as possible. I have had 3 children and started seeing one at 16. I didn't actually have sex until I was 18 but it helped me get prepared for when I was fianlly ready

Unless you think you have some kind of infection, disease, or are pg, no need to see a gyn. It's not until your MUCH older do you need routine yearly visits to the Dr. Relax!!!! When you do go, get a female Dr., maybe you'll feel better. They are very gentle, because they have been in the same place you have!!
