Do you perform the subtraction of 60-12 first, or do you add 12+8 first? It's been a while, and I can't remember the rule?

I agree with dolf

It does not matter how you perform the addition and subtraction The results are the same.

It is not about the order you perform (ie what's first, second , etc). Order is important only when brackets (..) are used.

To start, in a simple equation like that (I use the word 'simple' just to imply that there could be more complicated equations as well) there are several ways to solve this.

I would recommend following:
Step 1: Add the positive numbers together. (60+8)=68
(Pleasae note: although + is not written for 60, it is +60)
Step2:Then add the negative numbers together. (12)=12
Step 3: Subtract the 'addition of negative numbers' from the 'addition of positive numbers' . 68-12
Answer is 56.

See this example:
Y= 60-12+8+15-22-3+6
= (60+8+15+6) - (12+22+3)
= (89) - (37)
= 52

Because the problem is a combination of subtraction and addition only, you can do whatever you like. I don't think there is a rule involved here, only if multiplication or division was involved. In that case, you would do the multiplications and divisions first, and then do the subtractions and additions.

For your problem, any combination will work.
Just keep remembering that the 12 is minus 12.

60 - 12 = 48
48 + 8 = 56

60 + 8 = 68
68 - 12 = 56

-12 + 8 = -4
-4 + 60 = 56

The answer always comes out to 56.

Always remember order of operations with the acronym Parenthasis Exponent Multiplication&division Addition&subtraction from left to right "PEMDAS"

use BODMAS or PEDMAS or DMAS or even BEDMAS all giving the hierarchyof the arithmetical operations you fing addition precedes the subtraction
so add 12 and 8 and then subtract the result from 60

Yeah, it's like what Dolf said. The answer will still be the same if the substraction or addition is done first. It doesn't really matter but we usually start doing from the left till the right.

However, if multiplication and division are involved. Then, multiplication and division must be done first before addition or substraction can be done. In short, multiplication and division first, then addition and substraction~!

You go from left to right. So you do the subtraction first.

When simplifying an equation or expression use:
The Order Of Operations in Math

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The acronym is:
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally as she swerves her car from Left to Right.
Parenthesis Exponents (Multiplication or Division) (Addition or Subtraction)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Do the Order of Operations in Math from Left to Right.

2. Simplify w/n the inner-most PARENTHESIS, first. Then, work your way outward and from Left to Right.

2. Simplify EXPONENTS, next. Do "this", from Left to Right.

3. Multiply or Divide from Left to Right, which ever operation comes first.

4. Add or Subtract from Left to Right, which ever operation comes first.

GIVEN: y = 60 - 12 + 8

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

SOLUTION:
y = 60 - 12 + 8
y = (60 -12) + 8
y = 48 + 8

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

ANSWER:
y = 56

Make sure to ALWAYS to The Order of Operations in Math from Left to Right. That way, we will stay out of trouble by making careless mistakes. ;o)

Hope this has helped, some.

doesn't matter (as you can see for yourself by trying both ways). Addition and subtraction have same precedence. Multiplication and Division have same precedence. However they have higher precedence over Addition and subtraction.
For your reference, the precedence sequence is:
Bracket
Division, Multiplication
Additon, Subtraction

Technically, you should perform the addition first, but since additiona and subtraction are on the same level of mathematic preceedence, it actually doesn't matter which you do first, the answer will come out the same.
