.bak is a backup file
If you want to use if, you must know what type of the file it WAS -just rename it to it's original extension. Example-

Suppose you are using TEST.BAS file- the backup file would be TEST.BAK.

Suppose accidentaly you deleted or lost original TEST.BAS file you can use TEST.BAK by renaming or copying it to TEST.BAS.

But remember, .bak files are previous copy of original file.. it must not exactly as original is. It is before copy of original.

How To Open Bak File

The first step in opening a file with a BAK extension is to find out what it is a backup of. A file with a BAK extension is typically a backup of some other file. For example, a file named C:\CONFIG.BAK is likely to be a backup of the file C:\CONFIG.SYS. Since CONFIG.SYS is a text file, we could use NOTEPAD to open CONFIG,BAK to view or edit its contents. If you don't know where your file came from, then try opening in NOTEPAD and see what happens. If the file is an executable, you will get nothing but garbled text if notepad is able to open it.

If this is an Autocad back up file, (the file that is automatically created when you save an autocad drawing file) then you just got to rename the file, change the extension '.bak' to '.dwg'. Then open the file using Autocad application (software).

Right Click, then click on Properties, or "Quickveiw" if it available. Try using notepad. If it is a text file it should work.
Or download "fileanalyzer" from the Spybot Sight. It will open anything.
