As usual, you're getting tons of bad advice on this topic. I can't believe how people just pull answers out of the air around here. Here is THE TRUTH about alcohol and breastfeeding, with references provided at the link below.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”
Pumping and dumping is not necessary. Pumping & dumping DOES NOT speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk. The alcohol is eliminated from the milk in the same way it leaves her bloodstream. The only reason to pump and dump would be if she became uncomfortably engorged.
Everyone metabolizes it a bit differently, based on body weight, how much they've eaten, etc. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. The general rule is to wait 2 hours per drink to nurse, per Dr. Hale. Another good rule of thumb is, "if your head is clear, your milk is too" or "if you feel sober enough to drive, then you are sober enough to nurse."

whoa! Pump and throw it out for 24 hours??? Thats crazy. what I did was this, 1 hour for every drink I've had, the rule is if your sober enough to drive your sober enough to breastfeed your baby. One night I went out and had a crazy night (I had pumped a lot beforehand) and I came home and waited until the following morning to breastfeed and I pumped and dumped twice in between. The percentage of alcohol that the baby gets from each drink you have is so small that its barely a big deal. Besides over what period of time did she have 3 glasses? If it was over the course of 2 or more hours its not a big deal anyway.
And I don't know who these people are saying "what kind of a mother will she be!" Theres nothing wrong with a night out for 2 new parents 2 weeks after the baby is born. My daughters ped told me we HAD to get out by her 2 week checkup.
~~~When I pumped and dumped it wasn't to make sure the alcohol was gone it was for my own comfort.
These people are being a bit cruel yeah two weeks a bit early
but not cool to judge her parenting completely.
I would next time pump enough for a day the night before and store it. Im sure this question was asked because she was concerned and makeing sure she did the right thing afterwards.
Goodluck and Good Question
Yeah, pump the milf! :P
Haha, sorry I thought that was funny ;) I would pump the milk and discard it. If she is also feeding the baby bottles (formula) or if she has some stored I'd feed the baby that for the time being and start fresh in 24 hours.
It seems that it goes by how the mother feels. If she feels tipsy, wait to feel sober before feeding the baby. Here is a link with a similar question:
I'm sorry you are having to make a decision like this.I'd throw it out.The baby at this age is too small and intakes very little else for nourishment.
Good luck.
First your wife should be ashamed! I mean 2 weeks old!!! What a mom she is going to turn out to be...But to answer your question...No I would not give that milk to the baby at all...Have her pump it out and make sure you set it on high when she is pumping! I pray she has some stored for the babies sake...4 oz is acceptable (although I would NEVER do this)
Alcohol is absorbed into the mother's bloodstream therefore it will be in breast milk...so NO please do not let her breastfeed! Tell her to wait at least 12-24 hours before giving any of the contaminated milk to her child...In substantial doses, alcohol can act as a depressant on the baby's nervous system, and potentially the respiratory system. Alcohol also acts on the liver, causing the organ to block production of blood sugar – which can lead to hypoglycemia...
Also PLEASE do not let the mother co-sleep with the child after she has consumed any alcohol....I would try and take care of the child if I was you for the time being....she should be more of a parent and stop thinking only of herself....This has affected her child and you are being a very wise parent in being the responsibly one. I am sorry she has put you in this position...
she probably should not feed the baby that milk. it's probably safe for her to have maybe 1 glass of wine but more than that i wouldn't think is safe.
